Three top White House officials have begun their quarantine after two administration staff members tested positive for the coronavirus. Among those who will be sequestered for two weeks is Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert. So will Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the CDC, and Dr. Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the FDA. New York’s hospitalizations fall to March levels
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the number of new daily COVID-19 hospitalizations had returned to the level it was at when he issued a statewide closure of nonessential businesses two months ago. Gov. Cuomo signed a “New York State on PAUSE” executive order on March 20. “Where we are today is basically where we were when we started. It has been a painful period of time between March 20 to May 9,” said Cuomo in his weekend press conference. “We are looking region to region across the state as to where it would be appropriate to reopen.” Read more.
Illinois governor says state to follow Massachusetts example on contact tracing
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker says as the states tries to meet goals for daily COVID-19 testing and contact tracing, he isn’t banking on any help from the federal government. Illinois officials will continue to increase testing on their own and are modeling contact tracing practices after Massachusetts’ approach. “We’ve had contact tracing across the state,” said Gov. Pritzker. “The Massachusetts contact tracing collaborative, we can do that in Illinois. We are, in fact. We’ve hired somebody who was at the CDC, who was an expert at their outbreak intelligence service, and we think that we can have a massive contact tracing effort up in the next few weeks.” Read more.
Michigan reports lowest number single-day deaths since March
The Michigan state health department reported the lowest number of single-day deaths since March 29 at 25 deaths reported. The number of Michiganders affected by the novel coronavirus continues to increase as the state health department reports an additional 382 cases over the weekend. Britain to administer mandatory quarantine on travelers arriving by air
Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that Britain would soon impose a mandatory quarantine on travelers arriving in the country by air. Prime Minister Johnson offered no details about how the quarantine will work. But he made clear he views people from abroad as the greatest threat to Britain. Read more.
