Heart disease includes a number of problems, many of which are related to a process called atherosclerosis, according to the American Heart Association. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke.
Other types of heart disease include heart failure (the heart isn’t pumping blood as well as it should), arrhythmia (an abnormal rhythm of the heart) and heart valve problems (stenosis, regurgitation and mitral valve prolapse). Left untreated, these conditions can be life threatening to patients.
