The federal government allocated more than $400 million for decontamination systems for hospitals masks to be reused, but they have seen little use in two heartland states – Kansas and Missouri. A Battelle Critical Care Decontamination System (CCDS) was provided Missouri in April for at least six months. Masks could be shipped or dropped off to be decontaminated and returned in 72 hours. The system can process up to 80,000 N95 masks per day and is free to use as funding comes entirely from FEMA. As of July 1, only 4,555 masks had been decontaminated in Missouri and about 6,000 in Kansas by the end of June. AdventHealth Shawnee Mission (Merriam, KS) had decontaminated nearly 10,000 masks in-house in the same span as many hospitals developed their own in-house decontamination system early in the pandemic. The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Battelle (Columbus, OH) a $415 million contract for 60 Battelle units, including maintenance and operation for six months. Read more.
