December 13, 2024- Community benefit, which Cleveland Clinic reports annually to the IRS, is a measure of the health system’s impact on the community. In 2023, it contributed $1.46 billion in community benefit for its operations in Ohio, Florida and Nevada. Cleveland Clinic’s most recent Economic and Fiscal Impact report measures its impact on the economy. This study was conducted by Silverlode Consulting, a leading economic impact analysis firm.
Two key components of community benefit are providing financial assistance and covering Medicaid shortfall for patients. Cleveland Clinic is a leading provider of Medicaid services in Ohio. In 2023 the health system spent more than $640 million to cover care for 344,000 patients with Medicaid. Financial assistance is the amount provided to those patients unable to pay some or all their medical bills. In 2023, Cleveland Clinic spent $261 million to provide more than 111,000 of its patients with free or discounted medically necessary care.
