June 4, 2026- Universal Health Services (UHS) and the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) have reached an agreement on key terms that will reshape the future of academic medicine and clinical operations at GW Hospital and Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center.
According to the organizations, the parties have made “meaningful progress” in long-running negotiations and now have agreement in principle on the vast majority of major terms, with only a few details remaining before final documentation is completed.
Under the proposed structure, UHS will establish a new nonprofit physician practice group expected to employ a majority of current MFA physicians and staff across GW Hospital, Cedar Hill, and affiliated outpatient sites. The arrangement is designed to ensure continuity of care while maintaining GW’s academic mission, including medical education and residency training programs.
The agreement also preserves key academic priorities. GW medical students, residents, and fellows will continue to train at UHS-operated facilities, while leadership roles are expected to align more closely between academic departments and clinical service lines.
Officials say the goal of the restructuring is to create a more financially sustainable model for the MFA while strengthening integration between clinical care, education, and research. A final summary of terms is expected once documentation is complete, followed by a transition period leading to implementation.
As negotiations near completion, GW and UHS emphasize that their shared focus remains on delivering high-quality patient care and supporting the next generation of physicians through a stable academic environment.
