The U.S. government and many car manufacturers are researching new technology that would allow cars to communicate with each other and other objects.
Auto manufacturers like Ford are testing Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication, or V2V, in hopes of reducing the number of automotive accidents by 79 percent, as estimated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “V2V works using wireless signals to send information back and forth between cars about their location, speed and direction. The information is then communicated to the cars around it in order to provide information on how to keep the vehicles safe distances from each other,”according to Green Car Congress.
In addition, vehicle-to-infrastructure, or V2I, is also being tested. V2I would allow communication between a vehicle and road signs or traffic signals. This system could also obtain information from traffic management systems about the best travel routes in order to avoid congested highways. According to the NHTSA, by combining V2V and V2I technologies, vehicle crashes would be reduced by 81 percent.
